How to Change Product Weights and Units in Bulk on Shopify

BulkFlow | | 10/15/2026

To change product weights in bulk in Shopify, select your products in the admin, click Bulk edit, add the Weight column and enter each variant’s weight before saving. For large catalogs, export your products to CSV, update the Weight value (grams) column and import the file back.

Accurate weights matter because Shopify uses them for weight-based shipping rates and carrier-calculated rates, and fulfillment services rely on them too. Updating them in bulk saves hours when you add a new catalog, switch packaging or find that many products are missing weights.

How to Bulk Edit Product Weights in Shopify

The bulk editor is the quickest native way to update weights for a group of products. Each variant appears as its own row, so you can give sizes or bundles different weights in one view.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products.
  2. Filter the list if needed, such as by product type or vendor, then select the products with the checkboxes.
  3. Click Bulk edit.
  4. Click Columns and add Weight, along with the weight unit if it isn’t already shown.
  5. Enter the weight in each variant’s row and check that the unit is correct.
  6. Click Save.

To fill the same weight into many rows, select several cells by dragging across them and type the value once, or drag a cell’s fill handle up or down. Save before moving to another page of products, because unsaved edits are lost.

The bulk editor handles up to 50 products at a time, so work through larger catalogs in batches. Filtering by product type first helps, since products of the same type often share a weight.

Bulk Update Weights With a CSV

A product CSV is better suited to hundreds or thousands of products, or weights that come from a supplier spreadsheet. Follow these steps:

  1. Export your products. Go to Products > Export and download the products you want to update.
  2. Keep a backup. Save an untouched copy of the file before editing.
  3. Update the weights. Enter each variant’s weight in the Weight value (grams) column.
  4. Set the display unit. Use the Weight unit for display column to choose how the weight appears in your admin.
  5. Import the file. Go to Products > Import, select Overwrite products with matching handles and import.

Only a few columns control weight and shipping, so you can remove unrelated columns to keep the file simple. These are the ones to know:

Column What it does Accepted values
Weight value (grams) Sets the variant’s weight in grams A whole number, such as 5125 for 5.125 kg
Weight unit for display Sets the unit shown for the weight g, kg (default), lb or oz
Requires shipping Marks the variant as a physical product that ships TRUE (default) or FALSE
Packed product length, width and height Sets the variant’s dimensions after packing Numbers in the packed product dimension unit
Packed product dimension unit Sets the unit for the packed dimensions cm or in

The weight column always uses grams, even if your store displays pounds or ounces. Enter whole numbers with no unit or decimals, and leave the column blank only if you want the weight set to 0.

Keep the URL handle, Title and option columns in the file so each weight lands on the right variant. For packed dimensions, fill in all four columns or leave all four blank, because a partial set causes an import error for that product.

If you manage product data across Shopify, WooCommerce or Wix, Bulkflow supports bulk import, export and updates to existing product records with field mapping. That can help when you need to update weights or other product details for many items at once.

Convert weights to grams

Because the CSV expects grams, convert your weights before importing. A spreadsheet formula can handle a whole column at once:

Your unit Multiply by Example
Pounds (lb) 453.592 2 lb = 907 g
Ounces (oz) 28.3495 8 oz = 227 g
Kilograms (kg) 1,000 1.5 kg = 1500 g

Round the result to a whole number before importing. For example, a formula such as =ROUND(A2*453.592,0) converts a pound value in cell A2 to grams.

Change the Weight Unit in Bulk

Each variant has its own weight unit, which can differ from your store’s default. Mixed units are common after imports or when several people add products.

To make units consistent, add the weight unit to the bulk editor and change it for the selected rows, or set the Weight unit for display column in a CSV. Check the weight values afterward, because a value entered in the wrong unit, such as 2 kg instead of 2 lb, changes shipping costs significantly.

Your store’s default unit applies to new products. You can review it in your store settings so new products start with the unit you use most.

Edit the Weight of a Single Product or Variant

For one product, the product page is the simplest place to update weight. Open the product, find the Shipping section, enter the weight, choose the unit and click Save.

If the product has variants, open each variant from the Variants section and set its weight there. A larger size or a multi-pack usually weighs more than the base variant, so give each one its own value.

Use Apps for Large or Rule-Based Updates

Apps help when you need to change weights by rule, such as setting every product of one type to the same weight, or update thousands of variants at once. Bulk editing apps such as Ablestar Bulk Product Editor let you filter products, choose the weight field and apply a value to every match.

Some apps also handle unit conversions for you. Ablestar, for example, can set weights in grams regardless of each product’s unit, and spreadsheet apps such as Matrixify can update weights and dimensions together through an import file.

Test any app on a small filter first and confirm the units. A value applied in the wrong unit across hundreds of products is easy to miss until shipping rates look wrong.

How Product Weight Affects Shipping

Shopify uses product weights to calculate weight-based shipping rates and carrier-calculated rates at checkout. If weights are missing or wrong, customers may pay too little or too much for shipping.

For weight-based rates, Shopify adds the weight of your default package to the weight of the products in the order. In Shopify’s own example, 4.9 kg of products plus a 0.1825 kg package totals 5.0825 kg, which moves the order into a higher rate tier.

This means the product weight should usually exclude the shipping box, since the package weight is added separately. Include any packaging that stays with the product, such as a retail box or bottle, so the total stays accurate.

A package assigned to a specific variant overrides the default package, but only for single-item orders. Packed product size, the outer length, width and height of a packed item, can also be added in the product’s Shipping section for box-type packages.

Tips for Accurate Product Weights

A few habits keep weights reliable as your catalog grows. Keep these in mind:

  • Weigh real products. Use a calibrated scale instead of relying only on supplier specifications.
  • Weigh each variant. Sizes, materials and multi-packs often have different weights.
  • Keep units consistent. Use one unit across your catalog to make errors easier to spot.
  • Set your package weights. Add accurate box weights in your shipping packages so totals are correct.
  • Find products with no weight. Export your products and look for 0 in the weight column.
  • Update weights when packaging changes. A new bottle, box or insert can change the shipped weight.

Common Problems When Bulk Editing Weights

Most weight issues come from unit mix-ups or from details of the CSV format. Watch for these:

  • Weights are 1,000 times too large or small. Kilograms or pounds were entered in the grams column.
  • Shipping rates jumped after an update. Values were saved in the wrong unit, such as kilograms instead of pounds.
  • Weights became 0 after an import. The weight column was left blank on rows that were imported with overwrite.
  • A product failed to import. Only some of the four packed product columns were filled in.
  • Checkout rates are higher than expected. The default package weight is added to the product weights.
  • Some variants still have no weight. Only the first variant of each product was updated.

Conclusion

Updating Shopify weight in bulk keeps your shipping rates accurate without editing every product by hand. Whether you use the bulk editor, a CSV or an app, consistent units and accurate package weights make sure customers pay the right amount at checkout.
