Shopify Variant Combinations: Limits, Setup and Removal Tips
Shopify variant combinations are the individual versions of a product created from its option values, such as a small blue shirt or a large red one. When you add options like Size and Color, Shopify creates a variant for each combination of their values, and each variant can have its own price, SKU, inventory, weight and image.
A product can have up to 3 options and up to 2,048 variants. Knowing how combinations multiply, and how to remove the ones you don’t sell, helps you keep products accurate and easy to shop.
How Shopify Variant Combinations Work
Options are the choices a shopper makes, such as Size, Color or Material, and values are the specific choices within each option. Shopify multiplies the values across options to create every possible combination.
The number of combinations grows quickly as you add values. These examples show how the math works:
| Options and values | Calculation | Variants |
|---|---|---|
| Size (S, M, L) | 3 | 3 |
| Size (S, M, L) and Color (Blue, Green) | 3 × 2 | 6 |
| Size (3 values) and Color (3 values) | 3 × 3 | 9 |
| Three options with 4 values each | 4 × 4 × 4 | 64 |
| Three options with 13 values each | 13 × 13 × 13 | 2,197, which is over the limit |
Each variant is tracked separately, so inventory, price and SKU belong to the combination rather than to the product as a whole. This lets you see exactly which combinations sell and avoid overselling a specific size and color.
Variant and option limits
Shopify sets a few limits on how many combinations a product can have. Keep these in mind when planning a product:
- Up to 3 options per product. For example, Size, Color and Material.
- Up to 2,048 variants per product. Older guides often mention 100 variants, which was the previous limit.
- Up to 250 media items per product. Each variant image uses one of these.
- Compatibility above 100 variants. Some themes, apps and sales channels may not work with products that have more than 100 variants.
- A daily limit for very large stores. Stores with 500,000 or more variants can add up to 10,000 new variants per day through apps or CSV imports, although Shopify Plus stores are exempt.
How to Create Variant Combinations
You create combinations by adding options and values to a product. Follow these steps in your Shopify admin:
- Go to Products and open the product.
- In the Variants section, click Add options like size or color.
- Enter an option name, such as Size, and its values, such as Small, Medium and Large.
- Click Add another option if you need a second or third option.
- Click Done, then Save.
- Open each variant to add its price, SKU, inventory, weight and image.
Adding a new value to an existing option creates every matching combination at once. For example, adding Yellow to a product with Small, Medium and Large creates three yellow variants.
Add or duplicate single combinations
If you only need one new combination, add a variant manually instead of adding a value to an option. At least one of its option values must be new, since Shopify won’t save an exact duplicate of an existing variant.
You can also duplicate variants into another option value in bulk. Select the variants, choose the option to duplicate them into, enter the new value and pick which details to copy, and Shopify skips combinations that already exist.
Remove Combinations You Don’t Sell
Shopify creates every combination by default, but you may not offer all of them. A shirt might come in red only in small and medium, for example, so the large red variant shouldn’t exist.
To remove a combination, select the variant in the Variants section and delete it, then save the product. Removing variants you never sell keeps your inventory and reports accurate and avoids showing shoppers options that can’t be bought.
How missing combinations appear on your store depends on your theme. Many themes mark them as unavailable or prevent shoppers from selecting them, so check the product page after removing variants.
If a combination is only temporarily out of stock, keep the variant and let your inventory settings handle it. Deleting it would remove details such as its SKU, price and inventory settings, which you’d need to recreate later.
When You Need More Combinations Than Shopify Allows
Products with many options, such as made-to-order furniture or customizable gifts, can exceed 3 options or 2,048 variants. There are a few ways to handle this:
- Split the product. Create separate products by one option, such as one product per material, and link them together. Stores on Shopify Plus can use the Shopify Combined Listings app to show separate products as a single listing.
- Use a product options app. These apps add extra choices, such as engraving text or gift wrapping, that aren’t real variants.
- Customize your theme. A developer can build custom selectors for complex products.
Choose carefully, because extra options created by apps don’t behave like variants. They usually don’t have their own inventory or SKU, so use real variants for anything you need to track as stock.
Variants vs custom options
Variants and app-based options can work side by side on the same product. This comparison helps you decide what should be a variant and what should be a custom option:
| Feature | Shopify variants | Custom options from apps |
|---|---|---|
| Separate inventory | Yes, per combination | Usually no |
| Own SKU and barcode | Yes | Usually no |
| Own price | Yes | Often as an add-on price |
| Free text input | No | Yes, such as engraving or personalization |
| Limits | 3 options and 2,048 variants | Set by the app |
| Best for | Size, color, material and anything stocked separately | Personalization, add-ons and extra choices |
Manage Variant Combinations in Bulk
Editing combinations one at a time gets slow on products with dozens of variants. Shopify’s bulk editor lets you update prices, SKUs and inventory for many variants in a spreadsheet-style view.
For larger catalogs, a product CSV lets you create and update variants for many products at once. Each variant sits on its own row with its option values, price, SKU and other details, so the file mirrors the combinations you want on your store.
If you manage product data across Shopify, WooCommerce or Wix, Bulkflow supports bulk import, export and updates to existing product records with field mapping. That can help when you need to prepare or update product data for many items at once.
Common Variant Combination Problems
Many variant issues come from how options are set up or how many combinations a product has. Watch for these:
- A variant won’t save. It duplicates an existing combination, so change at least one option value.
- The product has too many variants. The options multiply past 2,048, so reduce values or split the product.
- The theme or an app misbehaves. The product has more than 100 variants, which some themes, apps and channels don’t support.
- Shoppers see combinations you don’t sell. Unwanted variants weren’t deleted after creating the options.
- The wrong image appears. Variant images weren’t assigned to each combination.
- Stock looks wrong. Inventory was entered for the product instead of for each variant.
Conclusion
Shopify variant combinations let you sell every version of a product from one page while tracking price and stock for each. Planning your options, removing combinations you don’t offer and staying within Shopify’s limits keeps products organized and easy to buy.
