How to Replace Images in Shopify Products, Files, and in Bulk

BulkFlow | | 10/15/2026

To replace images in Shopify, open the product, remove the old image from the Media section and upload the new one, or use the Replace option in Content > Files to swap an image file while keeping its name and URL handle. For many products at once, you can update image URLs in a product CSV and import it.

The right method depends on where the image appears and how many images you’re changing. Product photos, theme banners, collection images and files used across pages each have their own route, and knowing them helps you update images without breaking layouts or links.

How to Replace Images in Shopify

Shopify offers several ways to replace images, from a single product photo to a whole catalog. This comparison shows when to use each:

Method Best for Watch out for
Product media section Replacing photos on one or a few products You remove the old image and add the new one, then reorder if needed
Files library Replace Swapping one image file used in several places The new file must be the same format, and it works one file at a time
Product CSV import Replacing images across many products Image URLs must be public, and you should test on a few products first
Apps or the Admin API Large or recurring image updates Features and setup vary

Replace a product image in the admin

Replacing a photo on a single product only takes a few steps. In your Shopify admin:

  1. Go to Products and open the product.
  2. In the Media section, delete the image you want to replace.
  3. Add the new image by uploading a file, dragging it into the media area or choosing one from your Files library.
  4. Drag the new image into the right position, since the first image usually acts as the main product image.
  5. Add alt text to the new image and click Save.

Removing an image from a product doesn’t delete it from your Files library. Delete the old file there separately if you no longer need it anywhere else.

Replace an image in the Files library

When the same image appears in several places, such as a banner reused on multiple pages, replacing the file itself saves you from updating each location. Go to Content > Files, click the replace icon next to the file name and select the new file.

The new file must use the same format as the original, such as JPEG for JPEG. The file keeps its name and URL handle, but Shopify notes that its link changes, so update any links you’ve copied into emails, ads or other sites.

Replacement works on one file at a time and can’t be done in bulk. Before replacing an important image, download the original from the file’s preview so you have a backup.

Replace variant images

Variant images show the right photo when a shopper picks an option, such as a color. After adding the new image to the product, open the variant and select the new image as its variant image, then save.

Check each option on the storefront afterward. A variant can still point to an old image if it wasn’t reassigned before the old image was removed.

Replace Product Images in Bulk

Dragging and dropping images works for a handful of products, but it’s slow across a large catalog. The most accessible bulk method for most merchants is a product CSV update:

  1. Export your products. Go to Products > Export and download the products you want to update.
  2. Update the image columns. Replace the Image Src URLs with links to your new images, and update Image Position and Image Alt Text if needed.
  3. Remove columns you don’t need. Keep the handle and image columns, since blank cells in included columns can clear existing data when overwriting.
  4. Test a few products. Import a small file first and check how existing images are handled.
  5. Import the full file. Go to Products > Import, select Overwrite products with matching handles and import.

Every image URL must be publicly accessible and point directly to an image file. If Shopify can’t reach a URL, that image won’t import, so open a few links in a private browser window before you start.

Bulk editing apps and the Admin API are other options for large or repeated updates, such as seasonal photo refreshes. If you manage product data across Shopify, WooCommerce or Wix, Bulkflow supports bulk import, export and updates to existing product records with field mapping, which can help when you’re updating many products at once.

Replace Images on Other Parts of Your Store

Not every image lives on a product. Other images are changed where they’re set:

  • Theme images. For banners, logos and section images, open the theme editor, select the section or block and choose a new image in its settings.
  • Collection images. Open the collection under Products > Collections and change its image.
  • Pages and blog posts. Open the page or post, remove the old image in the editor and insert the new one.

If an image appears in many of these places, replacing the file in the Files library may be faster than editing each location. Check a few pages afterward to confirm every location shows the new version.

Show Different Images by Language

Some stores need different images for different audiences, such as banners with translated text. Translation apps can replace images for specific languages, so shoppers see a localized version while your default image stays in place for everyone else.

Transcy, for example, lets you upload a replacement image for each language on product, collection and other pages, then publish it. These features often have plan-based limits on how many images you can replace and may not cover images embedded in product descriptions.

Choose the Right Replacement Image

A replacement only improves your store if the new image meets Shopify’s requirements and matches the rest of your catalog. Keep these points in mind:

  • Supported formats. Shopify accepts JPEG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC and GIF images.
  • Size limits. Images can be up to 20 MB and 25 megapixels, but smaller, compressed files load faster.
  • Consistent dimensions. Use the same aspect ratio across products, such as square images, so collection grids stay even.
  • High resolution. Large, clear images let shoppers zoom in on details.
  • Descriptive file names and alt text. Describe the product accurately for accessibility and image search.
  • Consistent style. Match backgrounds and lighting to your other product photos.

Why the Old Image Still Shows

Sometimes a replaced image doesn’t appear right away or doesn’t appear at all. These are the usual causes:

  • Cached images. Your browser may show a saved copy, so refresh the page or check in a private window.
  • A different file is used. The section, page or variant points to another copy of the image, often one with a similar name.
  • The variant wasn’t reassigned. The variant still uses its previous image.
  • A translation app overrides it. A language-specific image is published for that language.
  • The import didn’t run as expected. The image URL wasn’t public, or the overwrite option wasn’t selected.
  • Old links are hard-coded. Emails, ads or external sites still use the previous image link.

Knowing how to replace images in Shopify lets you refresh product photos, fix mistakes and keep your store looking current without starting from scratch.
