How to Connect Claude to Your Shopify Store Data with MCP

BulkFlow | | 10/15/2026

The simplest way to connect Claude to Shopify is the Shopify connector for Claude, an MCP connector made by Shopify. Once you install it and approve access in your Shopify admin, you can ask Claude to look up orders, check inventory, create products and discounts, and run sales analytics in a normal chat.

Developers have a second route through Claude Code, using Shopify’s AI Toolkit and CLI. This guide covers both, along with what the connector can and can’t change, so you can give Claude the right level of access to your store.

Ways to Connect Claude to Shopify

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is the open standard Claude uses to work with outside tools. An MCP server exposes actions such as “list orders” or “update product,” and Claude calls them when your request needs them. Shopify offers several MCP-based options, and the right one depends on whether you run a store or build on Shopify.

Option Best for Where it runs Store access
Shopify connector for Claude Merchants managing a store in chat Claude apps Read-only, or write access if you approve it
Shopify AI Toolkit with the Shopify CLI connector Developers building apps, themes or store automations Claude Code and other coding tools Store data through the Shopify API, within the access you grant
Shopify Dev MCP Developers who need Shopify docs and API schemas Claude Code and other coding tools None, it doesn’t connect to a store
Third-party MCP servers Specific needs the official options don’t cover Varies by provider Depends on the server and its permissions

For most store owners, the official connector is the right starting point. Shopify’s own guidance is to use its official integration rather than creating an API access token or building your own connection.

How to Set Up the Shopify Connector for Claude

The connector is installed from Claude, not from the Shopify App Store. Setup takes a few minutes, and Shopify recommends doing it in a desktop browser.

Before you start

Decide which Shopify staff account will authorize the connector. Claude acts through that account’s permissions, so a staff member who can’t edit products can’t give Claude that ability either. Using an account with only the permissions Claude needs is a simple way to limit risk.

Also check your Claude account. Connector availability depends on Anthropic’s plans and settings, and in a Claude workspace, the owner can restrict which connectors members can use.

Install and authorize the connector

  1. Open the connector page. Go to the Shopify connector in Claude’s connector directory at claude.ai/directory/connectors/shopify.
  2. Install it. Claude connects to Shopify and redirects you to your Shopify admin to sign in.
  3. Review the access request. On the install page, check the data access level the connector is asking for, then approve or decline it.
  4. Turn the connector on in your chat. Back in Claude, make sure the Shopify connector is enabled for the conversation you’re using.
  5. Test with a read-only request. Ask something like “Show me my 10 most recent orders from Shopify” and compare the answer with your admin.

Choose read-only or write access

The connector has two access levels. Read-only lets Claude view your store data without changing anything, while write access lets Claude edit data and take actions for you.

Choose carefully the first time. If Claude later needs more access, you’ll be asked to approve the increase, but you can’t lower an approved level. To go back to read-only, you have to uninstall the connector and install it again.

Switch stores or disconnect

The connector works with one store at a time, even within the same organization. To change stores, ask Claude to connect to a different store you own, which disconnects the current one and starts a new authorization.

Start a new conversation after switching. Older conversations can keep using the previous connection and may keep asking you to authorize the store you left. To remove access completely, uninstall the integration from your Shopify admin, after which Claude can no longer read or edit your store data.

What Claude Can Do in Your Store

With the connector on, Claude can work across most day-to-day store data. Some areas are read-only by design, even if you approve write access.

Area What Claude can do Access
Products Create products with variants, options and prices, update titles, descriptions, images, prices and SKUs, and change status in batches of up to 50 Read and write
Collections Create manual or smart collections, update them and add products Read and write
Inventory Check stock across locations and set quantities with a reason, such as received or damaged Read and write
Discounts Create percentage-off codes for the whole store, specific products or a collection Write
Orders List up to 50 orders at a time and view details, including tracking Read-only
Customers Look up customers by name, email, location or tag, with order count and total spend Read-only
Analytics Answer questions about sales, orders, products, customers and fulfillment, with tables and charts Read-only

Claude can also handle pages, menus and other store data through the Shopify Admin API, asking for confirmation before changes. Results vary more in these areas, so check the outcome in your admin.

Example requests

Requests work best when they name Shopify and ask for one task at a time. Without the word Shopify, Claude may explain how to do something instead of doing it.

  • “Show me my total Shopify sales for the last 30 days, broken down by product.”
  • “How many Vanilla Bean Candles are left in Shopify?” followed by “Set it to 40.”
  • “Make a Holiday Gifts collection in Shopify with my three bestsellers.”
  • “Create a 15 percent off Shopify discount code called COZY15.”
  • “Show my top-spending Shopify customers.”

Keep analytics questions short and specific. Asking for one metric over one time period gives clearer results than a broad request for a full business review.

What the Connector Can’t Do

Shopify blocks some actions entirely, even with write access. Knowing these limits up front saves you from asking Claude for something it can’t complete.

  • Money and paid orders. Claude can’t issue refunds, cancel or capture orders, mark orders as paid, process returns, or create or adjust gift cards.
  • Order and customer edits. Changes to orders and customer records stay in your Shopify admin.
  • Your live theme. Claude can edit unpublished themes but can’t edit, publish or delete your live theme. Duplicate the theme, let Claude edit the copy, then publish it yourself.
  • Store settings. Your plan, payments, taxes and domains can only be changed in the admin.
  • Other discount types. Claude creates percentage-off codes only, and it doesn’t change existing codes or create fixed-amount discounts.

Large batches have a practical limit too. The connector changes items one at a time, so a big batch can stop partway, and some actions cover only a limited number of items. Check that batch changes finished, and complete any leftovers in your admin.

For catalog-wide changes, a spreadsheet-based bulk update is often easier to review before anything goes live. Bulkflow supports bulk import, export and updates with field mapping for Shopify, WooCommerce and Wix, which suits changes across hundreds or thousands of products.

Using Claude Code With Shopify

If you build apps, themes or automations, Claude Code connects to Shopify through the Shopify AI Toolkit. The toolkit gives Claude access to Shopify’s developer documentation and API schemas, validates GraphQL, Liquid and extension code, and handles store tasks through the Shopify CLI.

Shopify recommends installing the toolkit as a Claude Code plugin, which updates automatically:

claude plugin install shopify-ai-toolkit@claude-plugins-official

Store access in Claude Code comes from the Shopify CLI connector, which authorizes your local AI tool to use the Shopify API for a store. As with the chat connector, it’s limited by the access you approve and your own user permissions. Store tasks are prepared first, and you choose when to run them.

If you only need documentation and schema help, the Dev MCP server is a lighter option. It runs locally, needs no authentication and doesn’t connect to any store:

claude mcp add --transport stdio shopify-dev-mcp -- npx -y @shopify/dev-mcp@latest

Both options need Node.js 18 or later. Test store changes on a development store before running them against your live one, since validation catches many errors but not every logical mistake.

Third-Party Shopify MCP Servers

Before Shopify’s connector existed, connecting Claude to a store meant running a community MCP server with an Admin API access token in Claude Desktop’s configuration file. Many guides still describe that method, and a range of open-source and paid servers remain available.

A third-party server can still make sense for needs the official options don’t cover, such as analytics across several stores at once. Weigh the trade-offs before connecting one, because it isn’t maintained by Shopify, may break when Shopify’s API changes and often relies on a long-lived token that has to be stored securely. For managing a single store, Shopify’s connector avoids these issues.

Keep Your Store Safe

Connecting Claude gives an AI tool real access to your business, and you remain responsible for what it changes. Shopify doesn’t review or approve actions that connected AI tools take on your behalf, so a few habits go a long way:

  • Start read-only. Approve write access only when you have a specific task for it, remembering that lowering access later means reinstalling.
  • Use a limited staff account. Claude can’t do more than the account it acts through, so match that account’s permissions to the job.
  • Review changes promptly. Check prices, listings and theme copies after Claude edits them, and confirm that batch changes completed.
  • Understand where data goes. Once you share store data with Claude, it’s processed under Anthropic’s terms and privacy policy rather than Shopify’s, so review those and your obligations to customers under privacy laws.
  • Keep a recent export. A current product export gives you something to compare against or restore from if a change goes wrong.

Conclusion

Shopify MCP for Claude has become much simpler with Shopify’s official connector, which lets you manage products, inventory, discounts and analytics in a chat, while developers get deeper access through Claude Code and the AI Toolkit. Choosing the right route and the right access level lets Claude take routine store work off your plate without giving away more control than you intend.
