A Guide to Finding and Replacing Text Across Shopify Products and Themes

BulkFlow | | 10/15/2026

Shopify doesn’t have a single find and replace tool for your whole store. To replace text across products, export them to CSV, use your spreadsheet’s find and replace feature and import the file back, while theme wording can be changed with Edit default theme content, which includes a search filter.

The right method depends on where the text lives, whether that’s product titles and descriptions, storefront labels, theme code or supplier feeds. Choosing carefully helps you update a brand name, fix a typo or rename a promotion everywhere without breaking anything.

How to Find and Replace in Shopify

Each type of content has its own route for find and replace. This table shows where to start:

What you want to change Method Notes
Product titles, descriptions, vendors, tags or SEO fields Product CSV export and import, or a bulk editing app Use your spreadsheet’s find and replace, then import with overwrite
Storefront labels, such as “Add to cart” or “Sold out” Edit default theme content Use the Filter items search to find the wording
Text output by theme code Theme code editor or Liquid’s replace filter Duplicate your theme before editing code
Supplier or feed data before import Feed and inventory sync apps with find and replace rules Clean values before they reach your store
Recurring changes across store data Workflow or bulk editing apps Useful for scheduled or rule-based updates

Shopify’s bulk editor doesn’t include a find and replace function, but it’s still useful for smaller changes. You can add a column, such as Title or Vendor, and edit the values for selected products in one view.

Find and Replace Product Data With a CSV

A product CSV is the most flexible native way to replace text across many products. It works with any spreadsheet program, so follow these steps:

  1. Export your products. Go to Products > Export and export the products you want to change.
  2. Make a backup copy. Keep an untouched version of the file so you can restore the original text.
  3. Open the file in a spreadsheet. Select only the column you want to change, such as Title, Body (HTML), Vendor or Tags.
  4. Run find and replace. Use your spreadsheet’s find and replace tool on that column, with match case or whole-cell options as needed.
  5. Remove columns you didn’t change. Keep the Handle column and the columns you edited.
  6. Import the file. Go to Products > Import, select Overwrite products with matching handles and import.
  7. Check a few products. Review titles and descriptions on your storefront to confirm the changes look right.

Limiting the search to one column prevents accidental changes elsewhere. Never replace text in the Handle column, since handles identify products during import and form part of product URLs.

Product descriptions are stored as HTML, so a replacement can also change text inside links or formatting tags. Search for the exact phrase you want and review a few descriptions before importing the full file.

If you manage product data across Shopify, WooCommerce or Wix, Bulkflow supports bulk import, export and updates to existing product records with field mapping. That can help when you want to export product data, edit it in a file and update many records at once.

Find and Replace Theme Text

Storefront labels, such as “Add to cart,” “Sold out” or footer text, are usually stored as theme content rather than product data. You can change them without editing code:

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.
  2. Click the menu icon next to your theme and choose Edit default theme content.
  3. Use the Filter items search bar to find the word or phrase you want to change.
  4. Edit the text in each matching field.
  5. Click Save.

This editor only changes your default language. For other languages, update translations with the Translate & Adapt app, CSV files or a compatible translation app.

Some checkout wording can’t be changed, such as certain Shop Pay text, and a few subscription labels can only be edited on Shopify Plus. If a phrase doesn’t appear in the filter results, it may come from an app, a section setting or theme code instead.

Replace Text in Theme Code

Text that’s hard-coded in your theme, or text you want to change only on output, needs a code change. Always duplicate your theme first so you can roll back if something breaks.

Liquid’s replace filter swaps every occurrence of one string for another when content is displayed. For example, {{ product.title | replace: 'AlphaCorp', 'BetaBrand' }} shows the new name on the storefront without changing the product data itself.

Output-level replacements are a quick fix, but they don’t update your actual product records, feeds or search results. For permanent changes, update the source content through a CSV, the bulk editor or the theme content editor instead.

Use Apps for Find and Replace

Apps fill the gaps in Shopify’s native tools, especially for large catalogs or repeated changes. They fall into a few groups:

  • Bulk product editors. Some apps include a find and replace option for product fields and metafields, often with case-sensitive matching, so a mismatch in capitalization means nothing updates.
  • Feed and inventory sync apps. Tools such as Stock Sync can find and replace values in supplier feeds before they’re imported, with support for wildcards and regular expressions.
  • Workflow tools. Platforms such as Parabola can pull Shopify data, apply several find and replace rules at once and run on a schedule.
  • Storefront text apps. Some apps replace words on your storefront as pages load, without changing your store data.

Check whether an app changes your actual store data or only what shoppers see. Permanent data changes carry over to feeds, emails and other channels, while display-only changes don’t.

Tips for Safe Find and Replace

A find and replace across many products can introduce errors as quickly as it fixes them. Keep these precautions in mind:

  • Back up first. Export the data or duplicate your theme before making changes.
  • Watch for partial matches. A search for “man” can also match words like “manicure,” so search for whole words or exact phrases.
  • Mind capitalization. Decide whether “Sale” and “sale” should be treated the same.
  • Test regular expressions. If a tool supports regex, test patterns on sample text before running them.
  • Leave identifiers alone. Don’t replace text in handles, SKUs or IDs unless you mean to change them.
  • Review a sample. Check a few changed items on the storefront before updating everything.

Common Find and Replace Problems

Many find and replace issues come from replacing too much or in the wrong place. Watch for these:

  • Unexpected words changed. The search term matched parts of other words.
  • Products were duplicated or not updated. Handles were changed, or the overwrite option wasn’t selected during import.
  • Description formatting broke. The replacement altered HTML tags or links inside descriptions.
  • Nothing changed in an app. Capitalization didn’t match a case-sensitive search.
  • Storefront text didn’t update. The wording comes from an app, section setting or theme code rather than theme content.
  • Other languages still show old text. Translations weren’t updated alongside the default language.

Conclusion

Shopify find and replace takes a little planning because product data, theme content and code each have their own tools. Using CSV exports for products, the theme content editor for storefront wording and apps for large or recurring changes lets you update text across your store quickly and safely.
