Shopify CSV Limit Guide: 15 MB Files, Variants and Splitting

BulkFlow | | 10/14/2026

The main Shopify CSV limit is file size: a product CSV can’t be larger than 15 MB. Shopify doesn’t publish a fixed number of products per file, but other limits still apply to what’s inside it, including 2,048 variants and 250 images per product, plus a daily cap on new variants for very large stores.

Knowing these limits helps you plan large imports, migrations and bulk updates before an upload fails or times out. Most limits are easy to work around by splitting files and trimming columns.

What Are the Shopify CSV Limits?

Shopify’s CSV limits fall into two groups: limits on the file itself and limits on the data inside it. This table summarizes the main ones:

Limit Value
Product CSV file size 15 MB per file
Customer CSV file size 15 MB per file
Inventory CSV file size 15 MB per file
Variants per product 2,048
Options per product 3
Images per product 250
Image size Up to 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels
Barcodes per variant 20
New variants per day 10,000 for stores with 500,000 or more variants, except Shopify Plus
URL redirects 100,000, or 20,000,000 on Shopify Plus

Shopify doesn’t set a maximum number of rows or products per product CSV. In practice, the 15 MB size limit decides how much fits in one file.

A few other rules matter for every import. Files must use UTF-8 encoding, image URLs must be public direct links, and product imports can’t be canceled once they start.

How Much Fits in a 15 MB Product CSV?

There’s no fixed product count for 15 MB, because file size depends on what each row contains. A catalog with short descriptions and no variants fits far more products than one with long HTML descriptions and dozens of variants each.

Some parts of a catalog add size much faster than others. These details make a product CSV grow fastest:

  • Variants. Each variant takes its own row.
  • Extra images. Each additional image needs its own row with the product’s handle.
  • Long descriptions. HTML in the description column, especially with inline styles, adds a lot of text.
  • Metafield and market columns. Each extra column adds data to every row.

Check the file size on your computer before uploading. If it’s close to 15 MB, split it now rather than waiting for an error.

How to Import a CSV That’s Over the Limit

If your file is larger than 15 MB, or the upload times out, split it into several smaller CSVs and import them one at a time. Follow these steps:

  1. Keep a backup. Save an untouched copy of the full file.
  2. Decide how to split it. Group products by collection, vendor, product type or simple row ranges.
  3. Keep each product together. All variant and image rows for one handle must stay in the same file.
  4. Copy the header row. Every file needs the same header row at the top.
  5. Save each file as UTF-8 CSV. Check that each one is under 15 MB.
  6. Import the files one by one. Let each import finish before starting the next.

Don’t sort the rows in your spreadsheet before splitting. Sorting can separate variants or image URLs from their products, and importing a sorted file can overwrite products with incorrect data.

Trim columns when updating products

When you update existing products, you often don’t need every column. Columns left out of the file keep their current values, so removing unchanged columns can shrink the file considerably.

Keep the URL handle and Title columns, plus any columns your changes depend on. For variant-level fields such as SKU, keep the option name and value columns too, because leaving them out can delete variant options.

Blank cells in included columns clear existing values. Remove a column entirely instead of leaving it empty when you don’t want to change it.

The Daily Variant Creation Limit

Very large stores face a limit on how many new variants they can create each day. Stores with 500,000 or more variants can create up to 10,000 new variants in 24 hours through CSV or API uploads, and Shopify Plus stores are exempt.

The 24-hour window starts with the first upload of the day. If you reach the limit, Shopify shows a daily variant creation limit error, and you need to wait for the window to reset before importing more.

This limit only affects creating new variants, not updating existing ones. If your store is near the threshold, plan large launches or migrations as batches across several days.

Export Limits and Timeouts

Exports have their own limits. Shopify doesn’t list a maximum export size, but exports with thousands of variants can time out with the message “There was an error exporting your products.”

If that happens, filter your product list and export smaller groups, such as one vendor or collection at a time. Smaller exports are also easier to edit and reimport.

Large exports aren’t always downloaded straight away. How you receive the file depends on the export option and its size:

  • Current page or selected products. The file downloads in your browser when no product has more than 100 variants, and otherwise it’s emailed.
  • All products or filtered results. The file is emailed to you, and to the store owner if that isn’t you.
  • Orders. Up to 50 orders download in your browser, and larger order exports are emailed.

Product exports don’t include image files, only image URLs. If you’re moving to a new store, keep the old store active until the import finishes so the images can be downloaded.

Spreadsheet and Format Limits

Some CSV problems come from your spreadsheet program rather than Shopify. Microsoft Excel, for example, limits a sheet to 1,048,576 rows and a cell to 32,767 characters, which can cut off very large files or long descriptions.

Spreadsheet programs can also change your data when saving. Watch for these common issues:

  • Encoding. Save as UTF-8 CSV to avoid garbled characters and illegal quoting errors.
  • Smart quotes. Replace curly quotes with straight quotes, since they cause quoting errors.
  • Number formatting. Format SKUs and barcodes as text so leading zeros aren’t removed.
  • Header spacing. Remove trailing spaces from the header row, which can cause missing header errors.

When to Use an App or the API Instead

For very large catalogs, frequent updates or complex data, native CSV imports can become slow to manage. Import apps and the Admin API can process large jobs without manually splitting files, although they still follow Shopify’s product and variant limits.

Compare plan limits before choosing an app, since many cap the number of products or rows per job by plan. Test with a small batch first to confirm the data maps correctly.

If you manage product data across Shopify, WooCommerce or Wix, Bulkflow supports bulk import, export and updates to existing product records with field mapping. That can help when you’re moving or updating large amounts of product data and want to map fields without editing every column by hand.

Common Errors Related to CSV Limits

Many import errors trace back to limits or formatting. These are the ones you’ll see most often:

  • The upload fails or times out. The file is over 15 MB or too large to process, so split it.
  • Daily variant creation limit reached. Your store has 500,000+ variants and has created 10,000 new variants in the current window.
  • Image exceeds the limit. An image is larger than the allowed dimensions, so resize it or use a different one.
  • Options are not unique. Two variants of the same product share the same option combination.
  • Illegal quoting on line. The file isn’t UTF-8 or contains stray or curly quotes.
  • Invalid CSV header. Required headers are missing or have extra spaces.
  • Export error. The export includes too many variants, so filter it into smaller batches.

Conclusion

Understanding the Shopify CSV limit makes large imports and updates far more predictable. Keeping files under 15 MB, staying within variant and image limits and splitting data sensibly lets you move even big catalogs smoothly.
