How to Manage Shopify Blog Comments and Filter Spam

BulkFlow | | 10/15/2026

Shopify blog comments are built in, but they’re turned off by default. You switch them on for each blog in your admin, choose whether comments need your approval before they appear, and then moderate them from the Manage comments page.

The built-in system covers the basics: a comment form on your posts, automatic spam filtering and simple approve or delete controls. It doesn’t include threaded replies, so stores that want real conversations under their posts often add an app or use a simple workaround.

How to Turn On Blog Comments in Shopify

Comment settings apply to a whole blog, not to individual posts. A new blog starts with comments disabled, and you need to publish at least one post in it before you can allow comments.

  1. Open your blogs. In your Shopify admin, go to Content > Blog posts, then click Manage blogs.
  2. Choose the blog. Click the name of the blog you want to change.
  3. Pick a comment setting. In the Comments section, select one of the three options.
  4. Save. Click Save, then open a post on your storefront to check that the comment form appears.
Setting What happens Best for
Comments are disabled Visitors can’t leave comments Blogs used for announcements, or stores without time to moderate
Comments are allowed, pending moderation Visitors can comment, but each comment waits for your approval Most stores, since nothing appears until you’ve checked it
Comments are allowed, and are automatically published Comments appear right away without review Stores that check comments often and can remove problems quickly

Pending moderation is the safer starting point. Shopify filters obvious spam automatically, but approving comments yourself also catches off-topic posts, rude remarks and comments that share personal details before anyone else sees them.

If you run more than one blog, each has its own setting. You might allow comments on a how-to blog where readers ask questions and keep them off a news blog used for store updates.

Make Sure Your Theme Shows Comments

Turning comments on in the admin only works if your theme displays them. Shopify’s Dawn theme, for example, shows a comment form and approved comments on blog posts whenever comments are enabled for that blog, five comments per page.

Dawn also tells readers when their comment is waiting for approval, which helps on moderated blogs. Without that message, readers may think their comment failed and post it again.

If the form doesn’t appear after you enable comments, check your theme’s blog post settings first, since some themes let you hide comments there. Custom themes and page builders may need a developer to add the comment section, which in Shopify’s theme code is built around the blog’s comment setting and a new_comment form.

How to Moderate Blog Comments

New comments appear on the Manage comments page under Content > Blog posts. You can also see the comments for a single post in the Comments section of that post’s details page.

Status Meaning What you can do
Not approved Waiting for your review on a moderated blog Approve it, mark it as spam or delete it
Approved Visible on your blog Mark it as spam or delete it
Spam Hidden from your blog, flagged by Shopify or by you Unmark it as spam or delete it

You can select several comments at once to approve or delete them in bulk, which saves time after a busy post. Marking comments as spam manually only works on desktop.

A few behaviors are worth knowing before you start. An approved comment can’t be changed back to not approved, so the only way to take it down is to delete it, and deleted comments can’t be recovered. Unmarking a comment as spam approves it and also sends feedback to Shopify that helps improve its spam filter.

Shopify scans every new comment and hides likely spam automatically. Check the Spam filter now and then anyway, because a genuine comment occasionally gets caught and won’t appear until you unmark it.

How to Reply to Blog Comments

Shopify’s built-in comments don’t include a reply button in the admin, and comments aren’t threaded on the storefront. Shopify’s own suggestion for stores that want replies is to install a blog or comments app from the Shopify App Store.

Reply from your storefront

The simplest workaround needs no app. Open the post on your live store, fill in the comment form with your store name as the author and write your reply, mentioning the reader by name so it’s clear who you’re answering.

On a moderated blog, approve your own reply in the admin so it appears. It shows up as a separate comment in date order rather than nested under the original, which works for occasional replies but gets hard to follow on busy posts.

Use a comments app

Apps fill the gaps in the built-in system. The options generally fall into a few groups:

  • Blog apps with comment features. Some blog builder apps add comment layouts and replies alongside other blog tools.
  • Social comment widgets. Facebook-based comments let readers sign in with an existing account, which can cut down on anonymous spam.
  • Dedicated comment platforms. Services such as Disqus offer threaded replies, notifications and moderation tools, usually connected to Shopify through an app.

Before switching, check whether the app can import your existing Shopify comments and how it handles moderation and spam. Moving to a third-party system also means comments live outside Shopify, so review where that data is stored and what happens if you uninstall the app.

Tips for a Useful Comments Section

Comments are most valuable when readers can see someone is listening. A few habits keep the section helpful rather than neglected:

  • Check comments on a schedule. New comments are easy to miss among other store tasks, so set a regular time to review the Manage comments page.
  • Answer questions quickly. A visible, timely reply shows future readers that questions get answered.
  • Move support issues to private channels. If a comment is about an order or a complaint, reply briefly and ask the customer to contact you directly, rather than working through account details in public.
  • Publish simple comment guidelines. A short note on what’s welcome and what gets removed makes moderation decisions easier to explain.
  • Invite comments with a question. Ending a post with a specific question, such as how readers use a product, gives people an easy reason to respond.
  • Remove personal details. Delete comments that share phone numbers, addresses or other private information, even when they’re well meant.

Conclusion

Shopify blog comments take only a few clicks to turn on, and the built-in moderation and spam filtering cover what most stores need. Choosing moderated comments, checking them regularly and adding an app if you want threaded replies turns your blog into a place where customers ask questions and get answers.
