How to Find and Fix Shopify Products Missing Images

BulkFlow | | 10/15/2026

To find products without images in Shopify, export your products to CSV and filter for rows where the product has no Image Src value, or check each product’s media count through the Admin API. Shopify’s product list doesn’t include a filter for missing images, so an export or a script is usually the fastest way to build a full list.

Products without images look unfinished to shoppers and can cause problems on sales channels that require a photo. Once you’ve found them, you can add images in bulk, hide the products until they’re ready or show a placeholder in your theme.

How to Find Products Without Images in Shopify

There are three main ways to find products with missing images, depending on the size of your catalog and whether you have development help. The CSV method works for most stores without any extra tools.

Use a product CSV export

A product export lists every product’s image URLs, which makes gaps easy to spot in a spreadsheet. You don’t need any apps, so follow these steps:

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products and click Export.
  2. Export all products as a CSV file.
  3. Open the file in a spreadsheet and filter the Image Src column for blank cells.
  4. Keep only rows that also have a Title, since those are the first row of each product.
  5. Review the remaining handles, which are the products without any image.

Products with several images or variants take up more than one row, and extra image rows only contain the handle and image details. Filtering on rows that have both a title and a blank image cell avoids counting those extra rows by mistake.

A filled-in image cell doesn’t always mean the image displays. If a product points to a file that no longer exists, it can show no image even though the CSV isn’t blank, so spot-check suspicious products on the storefront.

Check variants without images

A product can have a main image while some of its variants don’t. In the same export, look at the Variant Image column for variant rows with a blank value.

Missing variant images matter most when shoppers expect the photo to change as they pick a color or style. If every variant looks the same, a product-level image may be enough.

Use the Admin API

For large catalogs or regular checks, a developer can query products through the GraphQL Admin API and check each product’s media count. Products with a count of zero are the ones without images.

Stores that import products automatically can check right after each product is created. One approach is to confirm the images were processed and, if they’re missing, set the product to draft and alert your team before customers see it.

Scanning the product list in the admin also works for small catalogs, since thumbnails show which products have no image. It quickly becomes impractical with hundreds or thousands of products, though.

Why Products Without Images Are a Problem

Product photos are often the first thing shoppers look at, and a missing image can make a listing look broken or untrustworthy. Shoppers can’t judge color, size or quality without one, so they’re less likely to buy.

Missing images also affect where your products can appear. Shopping channels such as Google Merchant Center require an image for each product, so items without one can be disapproved and won’t show in shopping ads or free listings.

Themes may also display gaps, uneven grids or default placeholders on collection pages. Even a few missing images can make a whole collection look unfinished.

How to Fix Products Without Images

Once you have your list, choose a fix based on how many products need images and whether the photos are ready. You can add images one by one, update them in bulk or hide products until images arrive.

Add images in the admin

For a small number of products, open each product, add media in the Media section and save. You can upload new files or choose images already in your Files library.

After adding images, assign them to variants where needed. Add alt text at the same time, since it helps shoppers using screen readers and gives search engines context.

Add images in bulk with a CSV import

For many products, add image URLs to a CSV file and import it. Each image needs a publicly accessible URL, entered in the Image Src column for the product’s handle, with Image Position and Image Alt Text as optional extras.

Import the file with Overwrite products with matching handles selected. Keep only the columns you’re updating, because blank cells in included columns can clear existing data when you overwrite.

If you manage product data across Shopify, WooCommerce or Wix, Bulkflow supports bulk import, export and updates to existing product records with field mapping. That can help when you need to export your catalog for review and then update many records at once.

Hide products until images are ready

If photos aren’t available yet, set the affected products to draft so they don’t appear in your store. You can change status in bulk from the product list or with the Status column in a CSV import.

Reactivate the products once their images are added. This keeps unfinished listings away from shoppers and shopping channels without deleting any product data.

Show a Placeholder Image

A placeholder keeps layouts tidy while you wait for real photos. Many themes show a default graphic when a product has no image, and developers can use Liquid’s placeholder_svg_tag filter to add one in custom templates.

Some merchants add a placeholder file as the actual product image during a CSV import. This hides the gap on the storefront, but the placeholder then counts as a real image, so the product no longer stands out as missing photos and may still be rejected by shopping channels.

Treat placeholders as a short-term fix. Keep a list of affected products so they’re replaced with real photos as soon as possible.

Find Products Without Images on Other Platforms

Many ecommerce and product information systems include a way to list products with missing images. In Geins, for example, you can filter the product list’s image column by missing values and export the results.

Other systems offer a downloadable report of products without images, which you can review and use as a to-do list for uploads. If your platform has no built-in report, a product export filtered on the image column works the same way as in Shopify.

Prevent Products Without Images

Missing images often come from imports, integrations or new products created in a hurry. Fixing them once isn’t enough if the cause remains, and a few habits stop the problem from coming back:

  • Check after every import. Run your CSV check or API query after bulk imports and integration syncs.
  • Use reliable image URLs. Make sure source URLs are public, load without a login and point directly to image files.
  • Create new products as drafts. Only set products to active once their images and details are complete.
  • Review supplier feeds. Confirm suppliers send image links for every product and variant.
  • Schedule regular audits. Check your catalog monthly, or after major updates, for missing or broken images.

Common Problems With Missing Product Images

Many missing image issues come from how images were added or linked. Knowing the cause makes them faster to fix, so watch for these:

  • Images missing after a CSV import. The image URLs weren’t public, required a login or didn’t point directly to an image file.
  • Products show no image but the CSV isn’t blank. The image link points to a file that no longer exists.
  • Images dropped during automated product creation. An integration created products before images finished processing, so check results after each sync.
  • Variant photos don’t change. Images weren’t assigned to variants.
  • Extra rows inflate your count. Additional image rows in the CSV were counted as separate products.

Conclusion

Finding and fixing products without images keeps your store looking complete and helps your products appear on the channels where shoppers search. With a quick export or API check, a bulk update and a few preventive habits, missing images become easy to catch before customers notice.
