How to Display Product Specifications in Shopify with Metafields

BulkFlow | | 10/15/2026

Product specs metafields are custom fields in Shopify that store technical details such as dimensions, weight, material, capacity or wattage for each product. You create a metafield definition for each spec, fill in values on your products and connect those fields to your product page template, so every product shows its own specs in the same layout.

Keeping specs in metafields instead of typing them into descriptions makes them consistent, easier to update and reusable across your store. They can also power specification tables, filters and smart collections without duplicating content.

How to Add Product Specs With Metafields

Setting up spec metafields takes four steps: plan your specs, create definitions, add values and display them on your product pages. Planning first saves you from renaming fields or re-entering data later.

Step 1: Plan your spec fields

List the specs shoppers need to compare products in each category. A furniture store might need dimensions, weight, material and seat height, while an electronics store might need wattage, battery life, connectivity and warranty length.

Decide which specs apply to every product and which only apply to some. Use short, consistent names, since the same field will appear on many product pages.

Step 2: Create metafield definitions

Each spec needs its own definition so Shopify knows what kind of data to expect. You only create each definition once, and you can do it in your Shopify admin:

  1. Go to Settings > Metafields and metaobjects and select Products.
  2. Click Add definition.
  3. Enter a name, such as “Dimensions” or “Material,” and adjust the namespace and key if needed, such as specs.material.
  4. Click Select type and choose the type that fits the spec.
  5. Optionally, allow a list of values, add a description and set validation rules, such as minimum and maximum values.
  6. Optionally, enable Smart collections or Storefronts access.
  7. Click Save.

You can also add a definition directly from a product’s Metafields section. Each namespace and key must be unique, so group spec fields under one namespace to keep them organized.

Step 3: Add spec values to products

Open a product, scroll to the Metafields section, enter the values for each spec and save. This works well for a handful of products or when adding a new item.

For many products, the bulk editor is faster. Select products in the product list, click Bulk edit, add your spec metafields as columns and enter or paste values like a spreadsheet.

Step 4: Display specs on product pages

Open the theme editor, go to your default product template and add a text block or collapsible row in the product information section. Click the dynamic source icon, select the spec metafield and save.

Each product now shows its own value in the same block. Test a few products, including ones without a value, because how empty fields display depends on your theme.

Choose the Right Metafield Type for Each Spec

Matching each spec to the right type keeps data clean and lets Shopify validate what you enter. Choosing carefully now saves cleanup later, and these pairings work well for common specs:

Spec Metafield type Why
Length, width, height Dimension Stores the number and unit together
Product weight Weight Keeps units consistent across products
Capacity Volume Suits bottles, containers and appliances
Wattage, page count, warranty years Integer or decimal Allows minimum and maximum validation
Material, model number, country of origin Single line text Short values that fit on one line
Compatible devices, features List of values Holds several entries in one field
Waterproof, batteries included True or false Simple yes or no specs
Care instructions, detailed notes Rich text or multi-line text Longer content, with rich text for formatting
Manuals, spec sheets File Lets shoppers download a PDF or view an image

Use rich text when you need formatting such as bold text or line breaks, since plain multi-line text may show formatting tags as raw text. Structured types such as dimension and weight are also easier to reuse in filters later.

Display Specs as a Table

A specification table is often clearer than separate blocks, especially for technical products. There are two common ways to build one.

When all products share the same specs, add a Custom Liquid block to your product template and write table rows that output each metafield, such as product.metafields.specs.material. Wrap each row in a check for an empty value, so products without that spec don’t show a blank row.

When each product needs a unique or flexible table, create a page for each product’s specs using the page editor’s table tool. Then add a page reference metafield to products, select the right page on each one and connect it to a collapsible row or similar block with the dynamic source option.

Use your theme’s spec blocks

Some themes include dedicated blocks for specs, so check your theme’s documentation before writing code. Archetype themes, for example, offer a product specs block that reads integer metafields with an archetype_spec namespace and shows each value as a five-segment visual bar.

These blocks usually expect a particular namespace, type or label, so follow the theme’s naming rules exactly. If the block can’t find a matching metafield, the spec won’t appear.

Metafields vs Metaobjects for Product Specs

Metafields work best for specs that are unique to each product, such as its weight or dimensions. Every product stores its own value in the same field.

Metaobjects suit shared, reusable information that many products reference, such as a material description, a certification or a designer profile. You manage the entry once in a central place, and every product that references it updates automatically.

Many stores combine both. A product might use metafields for its measurements and a metaobject reference for its material, so the material’s description and care details stay consistent everywhere.

Fill Spec Values in Bulk With CSV

For large catalogs, Shopify’s product CSV can import and export product metafields. Once a product metafield is defined, it’s included in product CSV exports, with column headers in this format: Name (product.metafields.namespace.key).

Export your products, fill in the metafield columns in a spreadsheet and import the file back. Supported types include single line and multi-line text, integers, decimals, dimensions, weights, volumes, true or false values, dates, colors, URLs and several list types.

Variant metafields aren’t supported in the product CSV. To edit specs stored on variants, such as size-specific dimensions, use the variant bulk editor with metafield columns instead.

Use Specs for Filters and Collections

Spec metafields can do more than display information. When you create a product metafield definition, you can enable it for smart collections, then build collections based on spec values, such as all waterproof products.

Storefront filters can use metafields too. Shopify’s Search & Discovery app lets you add certain product metafields as filters on collection and search pages, so shoppers can narrow results by material, size or other specs.

If you run a custom storefront, enable Storefronts access on the definition. Values aren’t available to custom storefronts through the Storefront API unless you turn this on.

Best Practices for Product Spec Metafields

A little structure up front keeps spec data accurate as your catalog grows. Apply these habits when you set up and maintain your fields:

  • Plan a field list before entering data. Agree on names, types and units so your team enters specs the same way.
  • Use one namespace for specs. Grouping fields under a namespace such as specs keeps them easy to find.
  • Add descriptions and validations. Tell staff what to enter and set limits to catch typos.
  • Pilot on a few products. Test three to five products on desktop and mobile before rolling specs out across the catalog.
  • Keep units consistent. Choose inches or centimeters, and pounds or kilograms, and stick with them.
  • Place specs where shoppers look. Collapsible rows or a table near the add to cart button keep details visible without cluttering the page.

Common Product Spec Metafield Problems

Many spec issues come from mismatched types, missing values or theme settings. Checking these first usually reveals the cause, so watch for these:

  • The metafield doesn’t appear in the theme editor. The block doesn’t support that metafield type, so try a different block or type.
  • Specs show raw HTML tags. Formatted content was entered in a multi-line text field instead of rich text.
  • Empty rows appear in the table. The custom code doesn’t check for blank values before showing a row.
  • A theme spec block shows nothing. The namespace, type or label doesn’t match what the theme expects.
  • CSV import skips spec columns. The header format is wrong, the definition doesn’t exist or the values are variant metafields.
  • Units are inconsistent. Different staff entered specs in different units, which makes comparisons and filters unreliable.

Conclusion

Product specs metafields give you a structured, reusable way to show technical details on every product page. With clear definitions, the right types and a consistent display, your specs become easier to manage and more useful for shoppers comparing products. We hope this guide helps you set up product specs metafields in your store with confidence.
