How to Move Your Listings, Customers, and Reviews from Etsy to Shopify
To move from Etsy to Shopify, download your listings as a CSV from Etsy’s Shop Manager, then import that file into Shopify with the Store Migration app or the standard product CSV import. Customers, orders and reviews need third-party apps, and Etsy’s reviews, search ranking and shop URL stay behind on Etsy.
Many sellers keep their Etsy shop open while they build their Shopify store. Planning what moves, what doesn’t and how you’ll bring shoppers to your new site makes the switch much smoother.
What Transfers From Etsy to Shopify
Not everything in your Etsy shop can move to Shopify, and some data needs extra tools. This table shows what to expect:
| Data | Can it move? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Listings (products) | Yes | Etsy listings CSV with the Store Migration app or product CSV import |
| Variants | Yes, with some limits | Option columns in the CSV, which may need restructuring |
| Product images | Usually | Imported from the CSV, but check them after import |
| Customers and orders | Partly | Third-party migration apps |
| Reviews | Partly | Review apps that import Etsy reviews |
| Etsy search ranking, Star Seller status and shop URL | No | Build traffic and reputation on Shopify |
Etsy’s listings export only includes items that are currently for sale. If you want sold-out or inactive listings in Shopify, you may need to relist them temporarily, for example by increasing their inventory, before exporting.
How to Move From Etsy to Shopify
The core of the migration is moving your listings. Start with products, then add customers, orders and reviews once your catalog is in place.
Export your Etsy listings
Etsy lets you download your active listings in one file. Follow these steps:
- In Etsy, open Shop Manager and go to Settings > Options.
- Open the Download Data tab.
- In the Currently for Sale Listings section, click Download CSV.
The file downloads as EtsyListingsDownload.csv. Keep an untouched copy, and save full-resolution copies of your product photos as a backup.
Import with the Store Migration app
Shopify’s Store Migration app can read the Etsy CSV directly, so you don’t need to reformat it. It’s in early access and available to some stores on desktop.
- When signing up for Shopify, choose that you’re already selling online and select Etsy as the platform you’re moving from.
- Install the Store Migration app from your Shopify admin.
- Upload your unedited Etsy CSV and click Import.
- Review the report of imported items and any issues.
The app has a few limits. Prices that vary by location aren’t supported, so products take their highest price, and products with more than three options don’t have their options imported.
Import with a product CSV
If the app isn’t available to you, convert the Etsy file into Shopify’s product CSV format and import it under Products > Import. Download Shopify’s sample CSV first to see the columns it expects.
Etsy’s export typically includes columns for the title, description, price, quantity, tags, image URLs, SKU and variation names and values. Check your own file, then map each column to the matching Shopify field, such as title, description, price, tags and image source.
Variants need the most work. In Shopify, each variant combination needs its own row with the same URL handle and values in the Option1 and Option2 columns, and you can add a variant image column for variant-specific photos.
Products that are missing a variant option fail to import, so add those manually. Save the file as UTF-8, keep it under 15 MB and import a few products as a test before importing the rest.
If you manage product data across Shopify, WooCommerce or Wix, Bulkflow supports bulk import, export and updates to existing product records with field mapping. That can help when you need to map columns from an Etsy export to Shopify’s product fields.
Move customers, orders and reviews
Neither the Store Migration app nor the product CSV covers customers, orders or reviews from Etsy. Third-party apps such as Shuttle or ShopList can move customers and orders, and apps such as Shuttle or Reputon can import Etsy reviews.
Etsy order data includes names and addresses, but buyer email addresses are limited, so you can’t simply turn Etsy buyers into a mailing list. Check Etsy’s current rules on contacting buyers before reaching out about your new store.
If you import historical orders through an app, turn off new-order notifications first. Otherwise, staff who receive order notifications get an email for every imported order.
Set Up Your Shopify Store
Set up the basics of your store before or alongside your import, so products land in a working shop. Cover these areas:
- Plan and domain. Choose a Shopify plan and connect a custom domain.
- Theme. Pick and customize a theme that suits your products.
- Core pages. Create About, Contact, Shipping and Returns pages.
- Payments. Set up Shopify Payments or another payment provider.
- Shipping and taxes. Configure shipping rates and tax settings.
- Collections. Organize imported products into collections so shoppers can browse.
After importing, check that prices, weights and inventory are correct, fill in missing descriptions and make products available to your sales channels. Hidden products stay unpublished until you do.
Run Etsy and Shopify Side by Side
You don’t have to close your Etsy shop when you open on Shopify. Running both for a while lets you keep Etsy sales coming in while your new store builds traffic.
Selling the same stock in two places can lead to overselling, so keep inventory counts in sync. Multichannel and Etsy integration apps can sync listings, inventory and orders between the two platforms.
Shopify’s migration guide mentions Shopify Marketplace Connect for Etsy sync, but its current App Store listing names Amazon, eBay, Walmart and Target Plus. Check whether Etsy is available for your store before relying on it, or compare third-party Etsy sync apps.
Bring Shoppers to Your New Store
Your Etsy search ranking, reviews and shop URL don’t carry over, and you can’t redirect Etsy listing pages to your Shopify store. A new Shopify store starts without Etsy’s built-in marketplace traffic, so plan how shoppers will find you.
- Write for search engines. Rewrite product titles and meta descriptions for Google rather than Etsy’s tag system.
- Collect reviews. Use a review app to rebuild social proof on your product pages.
- Grow an email list. Invite visitors and customers to sign up through your Shopify store.
- Use social media and ads. Share your new store on your channels and consider shopping ads.
- Submit your sitemap. Add your Shopify sitemap to Google Search Console after launch.
Etsy to Shopify Migration Checklist
Run through these checks before announcing your Shopify store. They catch most problems early:
- Products. Compare titles, prices, variants and images against your Etsy listings.
- Inventory. Confirm stock counts, especially if you’re still selling on Etsy.
- Checkout. Place a test order and check tax, shipping and confirmation emails.
- Mobile. Review product pages and checkout on a phone.
- Policies. Make sure shipping, returns and privacy policies are published.
- Reviews. Confirm imported reviews appear on the right products.
Common Etsy to Shopify Problems
Most migration issues come from Etsy’s export format and data that doesn’t transfer. Watch for these:
- Some listings are missing. The Etsy export only includes listings currently for sale.
- Variants import as separate products. Variant rows didn’t share one URL handle with option columns.
- Products failed to import. They were missing a variant option.
- Options are missing. Products had more than three options, which the Store Migration app doesn’t import.
- Prices look wrong. Location-based prices were replaced with the highest price.
- Staff received many order emails. Order notifications were on during an order import.
- The new store gets little traffic. Etsy’s marketplace traffic and rankings don’t transfer, so marketing is needed.
Conclusion
Moving from Etsy to Shopify gives you your own storefront, but it works best with a clear plan for your products, data and traffic. Exporting your listings, importing them carefully and building visibility for your new store helps you grow beyond Etsy without losing momentum.
