How to Add Variants to New and Existing Shopify Products Using CSV

BulkFlow | | 10/15/2026

To add variants in Shopify, open a product in your admin, click Add options like size or color in the Variants section, enter an option name and its values and save. Shopify creates a variant for each combination of values, and you can then set a price, SKU, inventory and image for each one.

Variants let you sell every size, color or material of a product from one page instead of creating separate listings. This guide covers adding variants to new and existing products, adding them in bulk and the limits to keep in mind.

How to Add Variants to a Shopify Product

You can add variants while creating a product or to a product that already exists. The steps are the same either way, so follow them in your Shopify admin on desktop:

  1. Go to Products and open the product, or click Add product to create one.
  2. In the Variants section, click Add options like size or color.
  3. Enter an option name, such as Size, which shoppers will see on the product page.
  4. Enter the option values, such as Small, Medium and Large.
  5. Click Add another option if you need a second or third option, such as Color.
  6. Click Done, then Save.

Shopify generates a variant for every combination of your values. A product with three sizes and two colors, for example, gets six variants, which appear in a list below the options.

The Shopify mobile app follows a similar flow. Open the product, add options and values in the variants area and save.

Add details to each variant

Each variant works like its own sellable item, so it needs its own details. Click a variant in the list to open its page, then fill in what applies:

  • Price and compare-at price. Set a different price for variants that cost more, such as larger sizes.
  • SKU and barcode. Give each variant a unique SKU so you can track sales and stock accurately.
  • Inventory. Enter the quantity for each variant at each location.
  • Weight. Add shipping weight so rates calculate correctly.
  • Image. Assign the photo that matches the variant.

You can also choose which variants are published to each sales channel and add custom data with variant metafields. Save the variant before moving to the next one.

Add variant images

Variant images show shoppers the right photo when they pick a color or style. Upload all the images to the product’s media section first, then assign one to each variant from the variant list or the variant’s page.

A product can have up to 250 media items, and each variant image uses one of them. Use consistent photos across variants so the gallery looks tidy when shoppers switch options.

Add Variants to an Existing Product

When a product already has variants, how you add more depends on what you’re adding. There are three common approaches:

  • Add a value to an existing option. Adding Yellow to a product with Small, Medium and Large creates three yellow variants at once.
  • Add a single variant. Add one variant manually when you only need one new combination, using at least one new option value.
  • Duplicate a variant. Copy an existing variant’s details and change at least one option value before saving.

Shopify won’t save an exact duplicate of an existing combination. If a new variant won’t save, check that at least one of its option values is different from every other variant.

Duplicate variants into another option

You can also copy several variants into a new option value at once, which saves time when launching a new color across many sizes. It takes only a few clicks:

  1. Select the variants you want to copy, which must share the option value you’re replacing and differ in their other options.
  2. Click the more actions menu.
  3. Under Duplicate variants, choose the option you want to duplicate them into.
  4. Enter the new value, choose which details to copy and click Duplicate.

Combinations that already exist are skipped. Review the new variants afterward to update anything that should differ, such as SKUs or images.

Add Variants in Bulk With a CSV

For many products, a product CSV lets you add variants without opening each product. Each variant gets its own row, linked to the product by its handle, with its option values, price, SKU and inventory.

The option names go on the product’s first row, such as Size in Option1 Name and Color in Option2 Name. Every variant row then fills in its own values, such as Small in Option1 Value and Blue in Option2 Value.

To add variants to existing products, export the products first, add the new variant rows and import the file with Overwrite products with matching handles selected. Test with a few products before importing your whole catalog, since mistakes in option values can create duplicate or unwanted variants.

If you manage product data across Shopify, WooCommerce or Wix, Bulkflow supports bulk import, export and updates to existing product records with field mapping. That can help when you need to prepare or update product data for many items at once.

Shopify Variant Limits

Shopify sets limits on how many variants and options a product can have. Plan your options with these in mind:

  • 3 options per product. For example, Size, Color and Material.
  • 2,048 variants per product. Many older guides still mention the previous limit of 100.
  • 250 media items per product. Each variant image counts toward this.
  • Compatibility above 100 variants. Some themes, apps and sales channels may not work with products that have more than 100 variants.
  • Daily limits for very large stores. Stores with 500,000 or more variants can add up to 10,000 new variants per day through apps or CSV imports, though Shopify Plus stores are exempt.

If you need more than 3 options or 2,048 variants, consider splitting the product, using a product options app for extras such as personalization or customizing your theme. App-based options usually don’t have their own inventory or SKU, so keep anything you stock as a real variant.

Edit Many Variants at Once

After adding variants, you’ll often need to set prices or SKUs for many of them. Shopify’s bulk editor shows variants in a spreadsheet-style grid where you can change prices, compare-at prices, SKUs, inventory and weights together.

You can add more columns, such as barcode or cost per item, to edit other fields in the same view. For changes across many products, a CSV export and import is usually faster.

Tips for Adding Variants

A little planning makes variants easier for shoppers and easier to manage. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Use clear option names. Shoppers see names like Size and Color, so keep them simple.
  • Keep values consistent. Use the same spelling and order for sizes and colors across products.
  • Remove combinations you don’t sell. Delete variants that don’t exist so shoppers can’t select them.
  • Give every variant a unique SKU. This keeps inventory and reporting accurate.
  • Assign variant images. Matching photos help shoppers confirm their choice.
  • Test the product page. Check that each option works and shows the right price and image.

Common Problems When Adding Variants

Many variant issues come from duplicate combinations, limits or missing details. Watch for these:

  • A new variant won’t save. It matches an existing combination exactly.
  • Too many variants were created. Adding a value to an option created combinations you don’t sell, so delete the extras.
  • The product hits the variant limit. The options multiply past 2,048 variants.
  • The theme or an app behaves oddly. The product has more than 100 variants.
  • The image doesn’t change with the variant. Images weren’t assigned to each variant.
  • CSV imports create duplicate variants. Rows repeat the same option values for one handle.

Conclusion

Learning how to add variants in Shopify lets you offer every version of a product on a single page while tracking price and stock for each one. Clear options, complete variant details and a quick check of the product page keep your listings accurate and easy to shop. We hope this guide helps you add variants in Shopify with confidence.
